World Nomination 14: Red Bull - The highest selling energy drink in the world
(WorldKings) From a favourite drink of local people in Thailand to a famous international drink consumed by hundreds of millions of people every year, that's the story of Red Bull, the highest selling energy drink in the world.
In 1982, Dietrich Mateschitz, an Austrian entrepreneur, took a trip to Thailand by airplane. As many people, he was troubled by jetlag that caused him some sleep disturbance and headaches. However, Mateschitz accidentally found a cure for his jetlag, a drink named Kratingdaeng.

In Thai language, Kratingdaeng means Red Bull. It was a sweetened, non-carbonated energy drink developed by Chaleo Yoovidhya, a Thai businessman who was died at 90 in 2012. The drink was first introduced in Thailand in 1976, containing water, cane sugar, caffeine, taurine, inositol and B-vitamins. It really helped Mateschitz to feel refreshed and free from his jetlag symptoms.
Being impressed by Chaleo's drink, Mateschitz tried to introduce it to the Western market. In 1984, Mateschitz co-founded Red Bull GmbH with Chaleo Yoovidhya and turned it into a global brand. Red Bull was founded by each partner investing $500.000 of savings and taking a stake in the new company but they agreed that Mateschitz would be the one who run the company. The product was first launched in Austria in 1987.
7 years later, Red Bull market was expanded to other countries in Europe, including Hungary and Slovenia. It began to conquer the US market in 1997 and the Middle East market in 2000. Dietrich Mateschitz and Chaleo Yoovidhya became the two of the richest businessman in the world with an estimated net worth of $4 billion. Every year, billions of Red Bull cans were sold. Only in 2013, more than 5 billion cans consumed.

Well, that's a good story - from local to global. However, the exact formula of Red Bull is still kept in secret. The head quarter of Red Bull is placed in Fuschl am See, an Austrian village of only 1.500 inhabitants near Salzburg. The building sports no logo and is heavily guarded. No interview was granted and we may never know what really makes Red Bull such a popular drink in the world.
