World Record Nomination 12: Rubik's Cube - The World best selling puzzle game
(Records.vn) Invented in 1974 by Hungarian sculptor and professor of architecture Ernő Rubik, this puzzle toy now is one of the most favourite toys of every people in the world.
There are some stories which tell us that Rubik's Cube was an accidental invention of the Hungarian sculptor. The actual purpose of Ernő when he created Rubik's Cube was to solve the structural problem of moving the parts independently without the entire mechanism falling apart. He did not realize that he had created a puzzle until the first time he scrambled his new Cube and then tried to restore it.

For his invention, Ernő Rubik obtained a patent in 1975 and his cube was first sold in the same year under the name Magic Cube (Bűvös kocka) in Hungary. The cube became more popular in Hungary and then Europe and United States after its introduction at some toy fairs in 1980. It also won the German Game of the Year special award for Best Puzzle that year. Then Ernő Rubik sold the license to produce and sell the cube to Ideal Toy Corp.
To meet Western countries' requirements about safety and packaging, the progress of the Cube towards the toy shop shelves of the West was briefly halted and a new cube, which was lighter than the old ones, was produced and a new name was used. Some names like "The Gordian Knot" and "Inca Gold" were considered, but the company finally decided on "Rubik's Cube."
Since then, the Rubik's Cube went on the journey to become the best selling puzzle game in history. More than 350 million cubes were sold worldwide as of January, 2009. Many prestigious magazines and newspapers ranked the Rubik's Cube as one of 10 best selling products of all time.
