World Record Nomination 7 : Bhutan - The first country to use GNH to measure people's life quality

(Records.vn) Is happiness more important than wealth? Maybe most of us, especially young people, cannot have a clear answer for this question. However, in Bhutan, a small country located at the Eastern end of the Himalayas, they choose happiness.
For many years, GNP (Gross National Product) and GDP (Gross Domestic Product) are thought to be the most important index indicating the development of a country and people's life quality of that country. But these methods was soon proved to have so many shortcomings that they can measure exactly how happy people are. A lot of research has showed that wealthy is not proportional to happiness and life quality. Many people in developed and rich country like United States, Japan... don't feel happy in spite they have a lot of money. They even feel stressful under the pressure of working, spending, raising children and other personal/social problems.

But when you go to Bhutan, this country seems to be in a different world where money is not the first priority of everyone. Bhutanese people pay attention on sustainable development, in which economic growth doesn't stand against humanity, culture values and nature. In fact, humanity, culture values and nature must be the subject of economic growth. They believe that people will be happy to live in a country where their human rights is respect, traditional customs and other culture features are preserved and promoted, and their living environment are protected.
Those are reason for the introduction of a new term, GNH - Gross National Happiness. This term was coined in 1972 by Bhutan's fourth Dragon King, Jigme Singye Wangchuck, who opened Bhutan to the age of modernization soon after the demise of his father, Jigme Dorji Wangchuk. He used this phrase to signal his commitment to building an economy that would serve Bhutan's unique culture based on Buddhist spiritual values.

People's happiness and well-being are always the center of "GNH" idea. They measure how happy people are by many indicators like infant mortality, jobless claims, divorce rates, crime rates, the quality of local democracy, individual freedom, and foreign conflicts,... everything to ensure the final result is the exact (or nearly exact) happiness rate of people.
GNH has only been officially used in Bhutan, where a Gross National Happiness Commission is charged with reviewing policy decisions and allocation of resources. With "GNH" idea, now Bhutan is one of the most peaceful countries and an attractive destination for tourists who want to stay away from the busy lifestyle of the modern world. Maybe, people in Bhutan are not the richest in this planet, but they are the happiest.
