Lithophones are the most ancient instruments of human. Most of lithophones that had been found in many countries are more than 2.000 years old. Here is a common definition of lithophone: "A lithophone is a musical instrument consisting of a rock or pieces of rock which are struck to produce musical notes."

However, there is no country that has a large number of lithophones that are special and completed like Vietnam. In this Southeast Asian country, archaeologists had found dozens of lithophones, called "đàn đá" in Vietnamese. Some of them were brought to Western countries like France and United States of America to research and exhibit. Others are still well-preserved by Vietnamese scientists.

More special than lithophones that had been found in other countries, Vietnam's lithophones are completed sets including many stone bars. While non-Vietnamese lithophones produce only simple tones, the Vietnam's ones are able to produce a variety of different tones. The stone music sounds like the rhythm of the streams and bird songs, and therefore goes well with the surrounding landscape of the Central Highlands (Tây Nguyên) in Vietnam, where most of "đàn đá" had been found.

One more special thing about Vietnam's lithophones is, unlike other ones, they are still used to perform in modern orchestra, alongside with modern instruments like guitar and electric keyboard. They are very famous in Vietnam because the liveliness and naturalness of their sounds.
