World Record Nomination: Schweppes - The first soft drink brand in history

(Records.vn) The history of soft drink industry started from 2 centuries ago. In 1783, a Swiss man, Johann Jacob Schweppe, developed a process to manufacture carbonated mineral water. It quickly became a popular drink in Switzerland and then Europe.

Johann Jacob Schweppe was not the father of carbonated mineral water (a.k.a soda water). It was a discovery of Joseph Priestley, an English chemist, educator, philosopher,... who published over 150 works. In 1772, Priestley wrote a book with the title "Directions for Impregnating Water with Fixed Air", presenting the idea of making soda water. However, he was not a businessman who could turn his idea into money.
11 years later, Schweppe, being impressed by Priestley's idea and recognizing the opportunity to make money from it, decided to open his bussiness in Geneva. He founded Schweppes Company in 1783, a company manufacturing and selling soda water under the brand name Schweppes. In 1792, Schweppe expanded his business to London and Schweppes soda water began to be popular in Europe. In England, Schweppes soda water became a favourite of the British Royal Family until now.

After Schweppe's death, the company still developed and introduced new products to its customer. In 1969, Schweppes Company merged with Cadbury to become Cadbury Schweppes. In 2008, Cadbury Schweppes was split and its US beverage unit becoming the Dr Pepper Snapple Group. The Dr Pepper Snapple Group is the current owner of the Schweppes trademark.
With a 230-year history, it is difficult to find any soft drink brand which is older than Schweppes. The brand is still a most popular soft drink brand in the world today.
