World Record Nomination 8: The Netherlands - The first nation in the world to grant same-sex marriages

(Record.vn) Although in most countries same-sex marriage is still something illegal, there are some governments that has changed their policies towards homosexual people.

Before 20th century, homosexual people are frequently subject to prejudice and discrimination in many cultures. Homosexual people were often perceived as a failure of the Creator or the embodiment of evil. Therefore, same-sex marriage was fiercely opposed.

From 20th century to the beginning of 21st century, homosexual people have fought for their rights and they were granted recognition in some countries. However, it was such a long way to be recognized for same-sex couples that they continue fighting.

Homosexual activists has fought for many years for homosexual people's right (nbcnews.com)

In 1989, homosexual activists took a long step by having the Denmark government recognized a legal relationship for same-sex couples, establishing "registered partnerships" very much like marriage. But not until 12 years later, same-sex marriage was officially legalized, and the first nation to do that was the Netherlands. This country jumped to the forefront when its lower house of parliament enacted the world's most comprehensive legal recognition of gay rights. The Dutch law allows same-sex couples to marry and gives them the same rights as heterosexuals when it comes to adopting.

What has happened after that event is there were 14.813 same-sex marriages in the Netherlands, including 7.522 between two women and 7.291 between two men. In the same period there were 761.010 heterosexual marriages. There were also 1.078 same-sex divorces. The supporting rate for same-sex marriages in the Netherlands increased to 85% in 2013. It seems that the Netherlands has become a paradise for homosexuals.

In 2001, the Netherlands became the first country that allow people same-sex to marry (maxhongir.com)
