The Ten Most Overpaid Actors 2014

We use data from the research for our Celebrity 100 list and Box Office Mojo to compile our Overpaid list. We look at each star's last three major releases (not including animated movies) and come up with estimates for earnings. We add those earnings together for a total compensation number. We then add the operating income from the last three movies and divide that by total compensation to come up with our return on investment number.
1. Adam Sandler
Returns $3.20 for every $1 paid. Sandler's latest movie, Grown Ups 2, was a hit but it didn't do well enough to compensate for the losses from Jack and Jill and That's My Boy.

2. Johnny Depp
Returns $4.10 for every $1 paid. When Depp's movies hit, they're huge. The Pirates of the Caribbean films have earned a total $3.7 billion at the global box office. But he's been overpaid for misses like The Lone Ranger and Dark Shadows.

3. Ben Stiller
Returns $4.80 for every $1 paid. Comedy is hard and lately, Stiller's films haven't been doing well. Movies like Tower Heist and The Watch were outright flops.

4.Ryan Reynolds
Returns $4.90 for every $1 paid. R.I.P.D. was one of the biggest flops of 2013 which hurt Reynolds' return number. Hopefully he'll do better with the upcoming Deadpool movie.

5. Tom Hanks
Returns $5.20 for every $1 paid. Cloud Atlas was a very expensive flop and Hanks played six different roles in the movie.

6. Will Ferrell
Returns $6.60 for every $1 paid. Comedies often struggle overseas which make it hard for funny movies to offer huge returns for studios. While films like The Campaign and The Other Guys have done fine, they haven't done welll enough.

7. Channing Tatum
Returns $6.70 for every $1 paid. Almost no one in Hollywood would consider Tatum overpaid but he lands on our list thanks to a combination of a giant backend payday on Magic Mike an an underperforming film in White House Down.

8. Denzel Washington
Returns $6.90 for every $1 paid. Washington can demand a huge salary so his films have to hit it out of the ballpark for him to offer a good return. Lately, his films have done fine but not outstanding.

9. Sandra Bullock
Returns $9 for every $1 paid. Like Channing Tatum, Bullock is not considered overpaid by Hollywood standards, she lands here because of math. Huge backend payments on The Blind Side and Gravity make her look overpaid.

10. Ben Affleck
Returns $9.37 for every $1 paid. Affleck lands on our list not because of any big flops but because of movies like Runner Runner which grossed just $63M at the global box office.
