Nathan 'Whippy' Griggs from Mataranka, about four hours south of Darwin, has been cracking whips since he was 14 years old.
Mr Griggs bought his first whip at Darwin's Mindil Beach markets while he was travelling through the Northern Territory with his family.
The Griggs family then settled in the rural NSW country town of Nymboida.
"There's not much to do in Nymboida so whip cracking was a good pastime," Mr Griggs said to 105.7 ABC Darwin.
Shortly afterwards, Mr Griggs started making his own whips from the inner-tubes of old car tyres and from kangaroo hide
"I've been making [whips] almost as long as I've been cracking them," he said.
"A good quality whip is made out of kangaroo leather. It's the strongest leather in the world for its weight."
Last year, after relocating to Mataranka, Mr Griggs decided to challenge an existing world record for the most whip cracks in one minute.
The previous record, as adjudicated by the Guinness World Records, was for 513 whip cracks and held by an American.
"I love whip cracking and it's awesome to do it," Mr Griggs said.
"I thought: 'bugger it, I'll have a go at having some whip cracking world record'. Why not?"
Mr Griggs was notified that he had beaten the record on Friday and now hopes to beat another record for cracking with the longest leather whip.
He usually cracks a 1.2-metre whip but the attempt could see him crack lengths of more than 18 metres.
"Leather costs a lot to buy so I've got to save up or get a sponsor for that whip," he said.
Mr Griggs said his passion sometimes leaves him with welts, blisters and spilt blood, as well as encounters with bikies.
Last year, when Mr Griggs was performing whip cracking at a Mataranka homestead, he was afterwards approached by a burly member of the Hell's Angels.
"He came up after my show and said: 'Can you crack a smoke out of my mouth?'
"And I said: 'I don't know about that, mate.'
"And he said: 'It's not going to hurt me. I've been shot a few times'. So it happened after a few drinks.
"I was pretty nervous at the time and you wouldn't want to miss, would you?"
