ZDT’s new wooden roller coaster to set world record

(Records) Attention all roller coaster enthusiasts: ZDT’s Amusement Park’s newest ride should thrill adrenaline junkies as it’s on schedule to set a new world record for the steepest wooden coaster with an incline at 87 degrees.

Following an announcement on the park’s Facebook page, owner Danny Donhauser said not only will The Switchback be the first modern wooden shuttle coaster, it will set a new world record for steepest incline which currently is 85 degrees.

“It’s always good to have a world record,” Danny said. “It is especially neat for a small park like us because world records are really hard to achieve for coasters.”

Inspiration for the ride came from the first wooden roller coaster that was built at Coney Island 130 years ago, the Switchback Railway, co-owner and Danny’s wife Sarah Donhauser told the Seguin Gazette last November when the attraction was first announced.

“The 1884 coaster at Coney Island took riders back and forth on a straight wooden track at 6 mph, and it set the path for a revolution in rides and entertainment that is still being felt today,” she explained.“Through improved roller coaster technology, we are recreating the early Switchback Railway to bring a contemporary version of the ride.”

The process which started nearly two years ago with the initial planning, goes along with the Donhauser’s long-term plan for ZDT’s.

“We built it to be a family entertainment center with the goal of an amusement park after a certain amount of time,” Danny said. However, one thing he said that will never change at the park are the affordable prices.

“We have a lot of stuff here indoor and outdoor, wet and dry, and everything is unlimited for only $22.99,” Danny said. “There is nothing in the park that we up-charge for, and we plan to keep it that way. We want to keep the price reasonable so a family can come and buy the ticket and not be hit at every corner for additional stuff.”

He added that the only thing people might find themselves spending money on is food.

“There is nothing they can spend more money on at the park unless they get hungry, and if they don’t want to eat the food from our kitchen, we do allow picnics to come to the outdoor park,” Danny said.

Ultimately, the Seguin couple hopes The Switchback will help increase attendance at the park.

“It’s expected to boost our attendance by quite a bit,” Danny said. “We do about 100,000 a year now, and with the new wooden coaster, we are expecting at least 150,000 or plus.”

Besides helping to bring more customers to their park, he said they also hope other Seguin businesses will benefit from their newest attraction.

“This is a big deal for Seguin,” Danny said. “There are a lot of small towns and major cities that don’t have an amusement park.”

As for when the ride will be officially open, he said they are hoping to hold a grand opening for the attraction on Labor Day weekend.

“We are still somewhere in the neighborhood of about 7 to 9 weeks away from opening The Switchback,” Danny said.
