Thousands of children attempt to set literacy world record

(Vietkings) Thousands of volunteers will read the same book on the same very day to children in more than a dozen different countries.

HOUSTON - Thousands of volunteers will read the same book on the same very day to children in more than a dozen different countries. On Monday, Oct. 19, organizers of Read Across the Globe hope to break a Guinness World Record by having adults read to more than 300,000 children in classrooms worldwide.

"We are so excited that Houston will be the center of an effort to break the Guinness Book of World Records title of reading aloud to kids in a 24-hour period," said Neil Bush, chairman of the Points of Light Foundation and the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation. "We are trying to raise awareness of the literacy crisis and trying to draw volunteers into schools."

According to UNESCO, the worldwide population of illiterate adults is 781 million people. Read Across the Globe aims to help get people involved in schools and encourage learning.

The volunteers will be reading "Farmer Will Allen and the Growing Table" by Jacqueline Briggs Martin and Eric-Shabazz Larkin. It's a carefully selected children's book about the real life story of a basketball player who became an urban farmer.

Volunteers are still needed. You can sign up to read in area schools by going to connect4literacy.org. Organizers hope the volunteers who read on Monday will come back to the schools to help out later.

"What we really want are the volunteers to go to these schools and stay engaged in these schools," Bush said.

Bush is the son of President George H.W. Bush and the brother of President George W. Bush. He say his own troubles with reading as a child made him an advocate for literacy as an adult.

"When it came to school work, I struggled," Bush said. "My mom and dad never lost hope in me and gave me the encouragement I needed."

It's that encouragement organizers hope volunteers can give to children worldwide.
